Leadership, Discipline and Building Businesses That Scale

Matt Jones’ career reflects a consistent pattern: operating without safety nets, building under pressure, and scaling businesses through discipline rather than entitlement.

Growing up in Newport, Matt joined the British Army at 16, rising to become one of the youngest corporals in the country. The experience shaped a leadership style grounded in accountability, pace and resilience — principles that continue to define his commercial approach.

Leaving school without formal qualifications, Matt went on to found S3 Advertising, which became Wales’ fastest-growing creative agency under his leadership. The business achieved a seven-figure valuation and was later sold, marking his first significant exit and establishing his credentials as an operator capable of building and realising enterprise value.

In 2019, Matt launched the men’s skincare brand Mesoa for Men, taking the business onto national television via Dragons’ Den in 2022, where he secured an investment offer from Touker Suleyman. Alongside this, he served as Chief Marketing Officer at The Trade Centre Group, leading brand and growth strategy within one of the UK’s largest automotive retailers.

R4 Advertising was founded to apply the same commercial discipline to media trading, planning and activation. The business secured a six-figure equity investment from the Development Bank of Wales, supporting a period of rapid growth that saw revenues increase by more than 300% and turnover reach seven figures in its second year of trading.

Across his career, Matt has built, scaled and exited multiple businesses, employing more than 100 people and operating at senior leadership level across advertising, retail and consumer brands.

Beyond commercial performance, Matt has remained committed to widening access to the industry. Through academies designed to remove academic bias, he has supported more than 300 students into creative and commercial careers, prioritising capability, attitude and merit over traditional credentials.

In recognition of his professional contribution and wider impact, Matt was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by Cardiff Metropolitan University. Reflecting on the award, he noted:

“Success has never been linear. It’s been built on resilience, showing up consistently, and taking responsibility when things were difficult. If there’s a message worth sharing, it’s that progress comes from commitment, not circumstance.”

The Fellowship recognises not only commercial achievement, but sustained leadership, contribution to education, and a long-term commitment to building opportunity within the industry.
