1. Create
Concept & Creative Intent
The brief was to mark the arrival of Sir Elton John in Birmingham with an activation worthy of the moment — celebratory, iconic and emotionally resonant.
This was not about promotion in the traditional sense.
It was about homage.
The creative idea centred on reinterpreting Elton John's unmistakable identity through the playful, imaginative lens of Lego — creating an experience that could be discovered, photographed and shared organically.
The objective
- Celebrate a once-in-a-generation tour
- Create a cultural moment, not an advert
- Blend spectacle with warmth and accessibility
- Honour Elton's flamboyance without parody
The result needed to feel joyful, respectful and unmistakably Elton.
2. Direct
Creative Leadership & Collaboration
R4 led the creative direction and execution of the activation, working closely with Legoland Discovery Centre Birmingham and Marshall Arts.
Direction included
- Translating Elton John's visual language into Lego form
- Designing an immersive experience suitable for public engagement
- Coordinating multiple stakeholders across entertainment, venue and brand
- Ensuring creative integrity while operating within a live visitor environment
Careful attention was paid to tone. The activation needed to appeal to families, fans and passers-by alike — without diluting its significance.
The focus throughout was on craft, detail and emotional clarity.
3. Deliver
Live Activation & Impact
The activation launched in parallel with Elton John's appearance at Utilita Arena Birmingham, creating a moment of discovery and celebration for visitors.
The result was an immersive, highly shareable experience that
- Blended music heritage with playful creativity
- Encouraged organic photography and social sharing
- Generated significant earned attention without paid amplification
Results
- 500,000+ earned media impressions
- Strong organic social traction
- Positive sentiment across fan and family audiences
- A distinctive cultural moment aligned with the farewell tour
The activation succeeded not by shouting, but by inviting people in.
